i wrote this a few days ago but..... so i've decided to use reverse pschology!
i've contacted some jws i would have consider to be friends once upon a time.
just a short, "hi how are you?
Got a message from her a little while ago cancelling her visit. She didn't say why she's not able to make it but says she'll call over sometime soon.
In the meantime I've been reading this thread http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/jw/experiences/170546/1/An-old-dub-friend-writes-to-ask-What-Happened and think i'll use the answer Veen gives:
His answer is, I think, the best I've heard:
''I don't think you want to know''
If they ask why........
''Because if I tell you, you'll want to leave too''
i know i am an old fart and a pedant, but things spelled incorrectly stand out, like copy of c.o.c in a kingdom hall library.. i don't think it matters too much say, posting on here,or in life generally,so many people make mistakes, but i do think it detracts from your credibility and your message in important stuff i.e a d.a letter for example, any excuse and dub's will ignore what you say.. so,is it not worth checking?
one word that many on here have a problem with is apostasy, often putting a c where the last s should be.. is having a problem with this word a true example of irony?.
love.
My pet peeve - excessive use of an ' with the letter s
For example.."Would you like to see my photo's?" It's photos - it's not a possessive noun just a run-of-the-mill plural!

Thanks for all the help guys! LOL
Seriously though...she's a nice lady but her being a jw is crippling her and her kids. I was kinda hoping I could say something to at least make her think. Guess I'd better go with the play safe option for now and bide my time a bit.

So I've decided to use reverse pschology! I've contacted some JWs I would have consider to be friends once upon a time. Just a short, "Hi how are you? haven't seen you in a while." - the kinda junk I'd expect from them. No reply so far. Guess I've been "marked".
It turns out that one of the sister I sent a text message too was actually away on hols (visiting her missionary daughter and son-in-law in Africa no less!) and she replied! Not only that but she's said she'd love to catch up and is going to call to see me tomorrow!! ARGH!!
This woman is a complete die hard. Her kids all leave school early to pioneer, oldest daughter has been a missionary since a teenager or early 20s. Her ex-husband is DF and she won't let the kids see him coz of that (don't worry, he's going thru the legal system for access). She's a nice lady but a bit too "zealous for the troof".
I'm looking for advice/opinions on what to say, and more importantly, what not to say! I'm in 2 minds - part of me wants to play it cool and not get myself DF but part of me wants to be open, honest and even a bit blunt about the whole money-hungry cult run by greedy power-tripping men!
Thoughts?
i doubt he will talk about jw"s as these are extreme control cults but maybe something could be learned how these cults seduce people into joining..
Usually the ones that live in communes. And have a single (usually male) leader who is worshipped as the Messiah.
Think David Koresh (sp?) and the FLDS.
has anyone on this board attended college or knows anyone who attends as an active jw?
how many remain in the organization after graduation?
i was baptized in 1988 and was encouraged to stop college after 2 years.
I went to college straight after finishing school. Did a 3 year course to get my diploma with a distinction.
I really enjoyed going to college and had a good social life even though I was living at home with my jw parents all the time. I didnt get any real flack for attending. College was only really looked down on if the course was over 3 years long or if the witness-student had to live in accomodation with wordly people. If they lived with their family or a jw family, then it was pretty acceptable to go to college.Several in my cong went to college as there was in one in that town. A few witnesses from other congs came to attend but most of them left the jws in time.
That was 10 years ago and for me really played no part in getting out of the dubs. In fact in a lot of ways it was a protection as I didnt get involved in the sex/drug scene even though i enjoyed having a few drinks and going to the clubs. Ah the memories!
i have been reading many posts today and some of you have mentioned your age and how long you have been away from the org.made me start wondering what the average age is for most on this site who no longer go along with the org.
it would be interesting to find out..
I'm 29 (just) and am out almost a year.
I hope you're gonna come back with the answer for us!
i suspect a few witnesses were not "straight" but didn't act on their sexual preferences.. i knew one up and coming bethelite who was approached by the bethel heavies and talked to about his "effeminate mannerisms" and was pretty much told that he could become a more prominent menmber of the bethel family if he "became more masculine looking" and preferably found a bethel sister to marry.
he followed the counsel and was thereafter a regular designated bethel speaker at district conventions.
interestingly, all of his bethel buddies thought the whole scenario was a hoot, knowing that he was really an effeminate man suddenly now looking very hetero..
Just reading about the lesbos reminded me of someone else.
I was friends with a sister a year or so older than me when we were kids. Her mother was a witness. Her dad came to meetings for a while but didn't get baptised and eventually stopped attending meetings. Her mother was always quite a headstrong lady. She was very anti-men and made it quite obvious in her 5-min talks from the platform. The elders never knew how to handle her and, after one particularly man-bashing talk, the school overseer said nothing postive about her talk but merely said, Sis I'll see you privately for counsel afterwards!
Turns out she was a lesbian. She left the witnesses (got DF), and her family, eventually and moved in with her girlfriend. Myself and another sister called on her on the ministry not realising that was her new home. We went scarlet and didn't know what to say when she answered.
To top it all, one Christmas she dressed up as the Christmas Fairy and went around the locality to help Santa!
growing up a jw makes a person unique, long after you leave.
even though i strongly disagree with much of what i was taught, i still am tainted by my upbringing in that i think a thought and then correct myself with what i now should think (or visa versa, think something and then remember what i once would have thought).. even now that i am far removed from watchtower thinking, i still feel somewhat of an alien from those around me.
though i am loved at work, i feel they laugh at me more than they laugh with me.. for some time now, i have been meaning to chronograph the concepts that a witness child is indocrinated with to show just how damaging an upbringing it is.
I think the content is really good. Not too overdramitised but making the points nonetheless.
However from a design/aesthetic point of view....
Personally I think you ought to change the colours. The black background is quite oppressive and off-putting for people worried about looking at anything anti-jw. The black makes it look a bit bad/evil/scary rather than welcoming, inviting and informative.
Also the capitals make it look like the words are being shouted. So perhaps change to small letters in a different font to distinguish from the quotes you use.
Otherwise, its a very good idea and well-executed.
